Fake Blood: How to Choose the Right One for Your Halloween Makeup 🩸

When it comes to Halloween and special effects makeup, there's no getting around fake blood! 🩸 But with so many textures, colors, and ways to use it, it's not always easy to know where to start. Don't panic: I'm here to help you sort it all out!

🎨 Color

Not all fake blood looks the same, and the color completely changes the effect of your wound:

  • Light (bright red): it mimics fresh blood that's just started flowing. Perfect for a fresh cut or a dramatic injury.
  • Dark (deep red): darker and richer, it looks like older blood or deep wounds. Perfect for a gory look or a zombie.
  • Green: Superstar even makes it in green! Great for creating an alien, a monster, or a toxic creature.

💡 Tip: mix light and dark on the same wound for the most realistic result!

💧 Texture

This is the most important factor, since each texture has its own job:

  • Liquid: it flows easily, perfect for streaks and drips running down the face or neck.
  • Thick: more viscous, it stays put and adds volume to wounds without running everywhere.
  • Clotted: its thick, lumpy texture mimics dried blood and scabs. Perfect for "older" wounds.
  • Drying: once dry, it stays in place and transfers much less onto clothing. Handy for a whole night out!

🧪 Specialty blood

Some fake blood comes with an extra twist that makes all the difference:

  • Edible: safe in the mouth, it lets you create blood dripping from the lips or teeth. A must for vampires!
  • Blood capsules: just bite down on the capsule and fake blood bursts from your mouth. Guaranteed effect, right on cue!
  • Powder: mix it with water; it's easy to carry and perfect for making large batches.

⚠️ Only edible fake blood and capsules can go in the mouth. Always check the packaging before use.

🧼 My tips for using it

  • Always do a small test on a discreet patch of skin first.
  • Watch out for clothes and fabrics: fake blood can stain. Protect your outfit, or choose a drying fake blood.
  • Most fake blood comes off with soap and water. If you get a stain on fabric, rinse it quickly with cold water.
